Why did you choose the field you are in?

I started my career in the toolmaking industry, completing a toolmaking apprenticeship and working for 13 years as a fully qualified toolmaker. During this time, I specialised in producing plastic injection mould tools, die cast tools and extrusion tooling. As technology progressed and CAD became more accessible, I developed a keen interest in the design aspect of the industry. To pursue this passion, I spent two years attending night school to retrain in design.

Looking back, I now appreciate how invaluable my toolmaking skills have been. The hands-on experience and technical knowledge I gained during those years have significantly enhanced my capabilities in design, contributing to my success in the field today.

How far have you come since you started?

I initially joined Louvolite in a Product Design capacity where I dedicated myself to developing innovative and high-quality products. After three years of contributing to various successful projects and honing my skills, I was honoured with the opportunity to advance to the role of Design Manager. This promotion was a significant milestone in my career and I did not hesitate to accept it. Embracing this new challenge with enthusiasm, I was eager to bring my experience and vision to the broader scope of managing and inspiring the Design Team.

What does your role entail, your day to day?

My role is diverse and involves transforming business ideas into tangible products. This process includes generating initial sketches, creating 3D CAD models and producing rapid prototypes to validate concepts. I then oversee the transition of these designs into full-scale production. At Louvolite, every CAD model is meticulously 'designed for manufacture,' ensuring that no design leaves our office without thorough tooling feasibility.

Our team consists of six designers, working closely together to deliver high-quality products. Together, we boast over 60 years of combined experience across various industries, which enhances our collaborative efforts and innovation. Additionally, I am responsible for reviewing and approving the tooling for injection mould tools, ensuring precision and functionality in our manufacturing processes.

"Always be curious: ask questions, learn from those around you"

How has Louvolite helped in your journey to where you are now?

Louvolite has provided me with the opportunity to take on greater responsibility in my daily role, particularly in design decisions and tooling. Additionally, I have the chance to collaborate with colleagues at all levels across the organization, enhancing my experience and contributing to our collective success.

Lastly, what advice would you give to the next generation when applying for a role similar to yours?

This is an ever-evolving industry, especially with the rapid advancements in technology. Always be curious: ask questions, learn from those around you and absorb as much knowledge as possible. There are countless methods and techniques to achieve the same outcome, so don’t hesitate to seek clarification and make detailed notes. I recommend creating your own reference guide to consult when needed.

Never underestimate the importance of tooling knowledge. Understanding aspects like split lines, draft angles, and various manufacturing techniques is crucial for any product designer in the plastics industry. This expertise is a key asset that will significantly enhance your design capabilities and overall effectiveness.
